Science
Our Science Lead is Mrs El-Boghdadly.
Intent
- At Peel Brow School, we provide a high-quality science education that provides children with the foundations they need to recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life.
- We want our children to appreciate how science has changed the lives of human beings and know that it is vital to the world’s future prosperity.
- Children will be immersed in key scientific vocabulary, which supports in the acquisition of scientific knowledge and understanding.
- The following types of scientific enquiries are woven throughout our curriculum:
Comparative and Fair Tests
Experimenting and Investigating
Identify, Group and Classify
Observation Over Time
Pattern Seeking
Research (including using secondary sources)
- All aspects of ‘Working Scientifically’ from the National Curriculum are interwoven throughout our curriculum, again, to ensure that children understand what it means to be a successful scientist.
Implementation
Science will be taught in planned, and arranged, topic blocks by the class teacher. Our strategy is to enable all children to be catered for through adapted planning suited to their abilities.
- We plan for problem solving and real-life opportunities that enable children to find out for themselves. Children are encouraged to create questions and be given opportunities to use their scientific skills and research to discover the answers.
- Our curriculum is progressive. We build upon the learning and skill development of the previous years, which is reinforced through use of Knowledge Organisers, completed Learning Journeys and the collection on ‘Prior knowledge’ at the start of each new unit of work. Teachers identify and address misconceptions.
- Working Scientifically skills are embedded into lessons to ensure these skills are being developed throughout the children’s school career, and new vocabulary and challenging concepts are introduced through direct teaching.
- Teachers find opportunities to develop children’s understanding of their surroundings by learning outside the classroom and enrichment events.
Impact
By the end of Year 6, our children will:
- Demonstrate a love of science work and an interest in further study and work in this field
- Retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real-life context.
- Be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge.
- Be able to articulate their understanding of scientific concepts and be able to reason scientifically using appropriate language linked to science.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the links between Scientific and Mathematical skills when organising, recording and interpreting results.
- Work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment.
Learn the possibilities for careers in science as a result of our community links, Careers event and The Great Science Share Community project.
Please see below for our Long Term Plan. From time to time, this plan may change as teachers adapt the learning to suit the needs of the children.
