Religious Education

'Let us join together across denominations, religions and cultures to make a habit of empathy and reach out to those in need'- Barack Obama

Our RE lead is Mrs Mawdsley

Intent

At Peel Brow Primary School, our RE curriculum is designed to help pupils make sense of the diverse religious and non-religious worldviews that shape our community and wider world. We want children to develop curiosity, respect, and understanding so they can appreciate similarities and differences, ask big questions about life, and reflect on their own beliefs and values.

Through our curriculum, we aim to:

  • Provide pupils with a secure knowledge of Christianity and other major world faiths, including Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism.

  • Encourage exploration of non-religious worldviews to reflect the diversity of belief in modern Britain.

  • Support children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development by considering how people’s beliefs influence choices, identity, and ways of living.

  • Equip pupils with the respect, empathy, and critical thinking skills needed to contribute positively to life in Bury and beyond.

Implementation

RE at Peel Brow is taught in line with the Bury Agreed Syllabus, through a carefully planned two-year cycle (A and B) which ensures progression of knowledge and skills across EYFS, KS1 and KS2.

  • Progression: Learning builds from early experiences of belonging and special stories in EYFS, to exploring sacred texts, worship and festivals in KS1/KS2, and finally to deeper questions of theology, philosophy, and ethics in UKS2.

  • Enquiry-Based Learning: Units are structured around key questions (e.g. “Why do people pray?”, “What can we learn from religions about deciding what is right and wrong?”, “Do religious people lead better lives?”). These promote investigation, reflection and discussion.

  • Breadth and Diversity: Christianity is taught in each key stage alongside other world faiths. Children also encounter non-religious perspectives to ensure balance and inclusivity.

  • Experiential Opportunities: Learning is enriched through visitors from faith communities, visits to places of worship, handling religious artefacts, and celebrating festivals.

  • Cross-Curricular Links: RE connects with subjects such as PSHE, History, English and Art, supporting the development of wider knowledge and cultural capital.

Impact

The impact of our RE curriculum at Peel Brow is seen in children who:

  • Have a secure understanding of a range of religions, worldviews, and their practices.

  • Demonstrate tolerance, respect and empathy towards those with different beliefs, applying this in their everyday interactions.

  • Reflect thoughtfully on their own beliefs, values, and experiences.

  • Ask and explore challenging questions about life, morality, identity, and society.

  • Are equipped with the critical thinking and reasoning skills to develop balanced views.

  • Leave Peel Brow prepared for life in modern Britain, as respectful, reflective and responsible young citizens who can contribute positively to their community
